The Ark of the Covenant is one of those objects that has an incredible weight of misterio al respecto.
It crossed the desert and the wilderness, made milagros happen, and at some point, disappeared without a trace.
There are no accounts of its destruction.
For thousands of years, humanity has been trying to find it, but so far, all we have are theories.
Here’s the story of the Ark that houses the Ten Commandments!
1. Building the Ark of the Covenant
According to scripture, God gave Moses specific instructions for building the Ark of the Covenant in the Sinai wilderness after the Exodus from Egypt.
Acacia wood was used to build the frame, and the Ark would be covered entirely in gold, inside and out.
The mercy seat would go on top, a solid gold lid that represented God’s throne; two golden cherubim wings decorated each side of it.
Gold rings were attached to the sides, and wooden poles threaded through them, ensuring the Ark could be carried without anyone ever touching it directly.
The stone tablets of the Ten Commandments were placed inside the Ark, serving as the covenant between God and Israel.
2. Miracles and Battles
The Israelites carried the Ark of the Covenant as they journeyed to the Promised Land, and this journey was filled with supernatural activity.
When the priests carrying the Ark stepped into the flooding Jordan River, the water stopped upstream, piling into a wall, and allowed the people to cross on dry land!
This is very reminiscent of the time when Moses parted the Red Sea.
En Jericho, one of the strongest cities of the time, the Israelites simply marched around the walls for seven days, and on the seventh day, the walls collapsed on their own.
The Israelites didn’t just see it as a holy object, but as a literal presence of God that traveled with them.
This is why the Ark couldn’t be approached lightly, and it was kept in a portable temple, called the Tabernacle.
3. The Philistines
During a battle against the Philistines, the Israelites made a terrible decision: they brought the Ark of the Covenant into the battlefield, assuming that God would grant them victory.
However, the Philistines won and stole the Ark, which they then placed inside the temple of their god Dagon in Ashdod.
The next morning, they found the idol of Dagon broken, lying face down before the Ark. So, they set it all back up, but the same thing happened again.
Then, the plagues began. Sickness, rats, and all forms of suffering plagued every Philistine city that housed the Ark.
They spent seven months moving it back and forth before deciding to send it back to the Israelites.
It was clear that God’s will doesn’t bend to human needs. He acts only when He decides it’s necessary.
4. The Move to Jerusalem
For years after its return from the Philistines, the Ark sat descuidado in a private home during Saul‘s troubled reign.
It was King David who finally moved it to Jerusalem. He celebrated the Ark of the Covenant to show how seriously he took its significance.
The procession included music and joy, and even King David himself danced through the streets, seemingly forgetting about his royal status for a moment.
However, forgetting oneself often comes with consequences. The Ark had stumbled during the procession, and a man reached to steady it. But the moment he touched it, he died.
That brings us back to the instruction that it’s not to be touched by anyone.
David established a tent for the Ark, but he longed to build it a permanent home. That task fell to his son Solomon, who built the great Temple.
The Ark of the Covenant rested in the Holy of Holies, an inner sanctuary that only the High Priest could enter once a year.
5. The Disappearance

However, the Ark of the Covenant isn’t mentioned anywhere.

If something as valuable as the Ark was taken, you’d think it would be recorded.
This sparked assumptions that the Ark was hidden beforehand or its removal was not recorded for some reason.
The prophet Jeremiah stated that people wouldn’t even think of the Ark anymore because La presencia de Dios would be known in a new way.
The Book of Maccabees says that Jeremiah himself hid the Ark before the Babylonians arrived!
Revelation describes a vision of the Ark visible in heaven’s Temple, but none of it was ever explained.
6. The Ark in Ethiopia?
The most persistent theory is that the Ark of the Covenant is located in Ethiopia.
Supposedly, it’s located in a small chapel called the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion, in the city of Axum.
According to a text called the Kebra Nagast, the Ark was brought to Ethiopia by Menelik I, the son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba.
Menelik grew up in Ethiopia, and when he went to visit his father in Jerusalem, he brought the Ark with him. Either he was given Solomon’s blessing or God’s.
Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity treats the Ark of the Covenant as the foundation of its faith.
To this day, a single monk guards the chapel in Axum and the Ark, but no one else is allowed to see it.
7. Hidden Beneath Jerusalem
Some believe that the Ark of the Covenant never left the Holy Land, so there’s a persistent tradition claiming that it was hidden somewhere beneath Jerusalem before the Babylonians came.
En Second Book of Maccabees describes the prophet Jeremiah receiving a divine command to take the Ark and hide it in a cave on Mount Nebo.
This is the very place where Moses died.
Another version claims that the Ark was hidden in the underground tunnels of the Temple Mount itself.
However, this network of ancient passages was never fully mapped because of the site’s archaeological value.
Essentially, this is another theory that simply can’t be confirmed in practice.
8. The CIA Search
This is where the whole thing starts to sound like a movie!
In the 1980s, as part of the classified Project Stargate, the CIA tried to locate the Ark of the Covenant from afar, and for this, it employed trained psychics.
Declassified documents confirm the sessions took place.
One of these psychics claimed that the Ark is located in the Middle East. The way they described the Ark resembles the biblical description.
The CIA’s involvement didn’t produce a map or any coordinates, so the project was eventually dismantled because it struck many people as unscientific.
But the fact remains that we’re still yearning to find the Ark, even 3000 years later!
9. Jesus as the True Ark
The earliest Christian theologians have provided an entirely different outlook on the Ark of the Covenant.
The Ark carried the Word of God, but in the Gospel of John, Jesucristo is also described as the Palabra de Dios.
It’s believed that the chest itself was never the point. The Ark was only meant to prepare the Israelites for their Messiah.
Through Jesus, God’s presence came alive on earth.
He is the High Priest and the sacrifice.
Also, the Virgin Mary is also often called the Ark of the Covenant because she carried the divine presence within her own body.
If we look at it this way, the Ark didn’t disappear; it was fulfilled!
