Making wise decisions doesn’t come easy to any of us, especially when we’re presented with multiple options.
You try to guess which choice might produce a better outcome, but at the end of the day, you’re just guessing.
Thankfully, we’re not doing this life thing all alone!
When you need wisdom, turn to the Bible. Here are 10 chapters you should read!
1. Proverbs 3
Proverbs 3 provides straightforward guidance: trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding.
However, it’s not simple advice. Leaning on God completely is one of the hardest things believers are called to; we spend our whole lives trying to do as the Bible says, and it never gets easier.
Our own understanding feels reliable in the moment, while the ancient verses of the Bible can sometimes strike you as overly vague and outdated.
In worldly terms, Proverbs 3 calls us to choose a path that’s morally right and walk it. When you set out to do something, it tends to work out because you focus on it.
En otras palabras, God clears the path for you as you go. Surrender to His wisdom.
This part of Scripture also warns us about believing in our wisdom. The sin of pride hides behind the need to handle everything alone.
2. James 1
James 1 tells us that if we lack wisdom, we should simply ask.
He doesn’t tell us that we have to earn God’s help. The Bible merely calls us to turn to Him, and that He will reward us for it.
Many people tend to feel like asking for help means they’ve already failed. Also, some of us turn to God’s wisdom only when all the other options are spent, and we start getting desperate.
He is not a last resort, but the first.
So, when looking for wisdom, make asking Him part of the plan.
People might shame you for needing help; God doesn’t.
3. Philippians 1
Discernment is an underrated skill, and Philippians 1 highlights exactly why it matters.
Paul prays that the believers’ love would overflow in knowledge and depth of insight, so they can discern what is best.
The order of things is crucial here: love comes first, and discernment grows out of it.
Philippians 1 also shows us Paul’s focus as he, even in jail, continues to put others above himself.
That kind of clarity under pressure is rare, and the Bible tells us exactly how to achieve it.
Love God first. Practice that love through your decisions while looking at the bigger picture.
4. Psalm 37
We’re impatient beings, so we often forget that not everything has to be decided right away, as much as we’d like it to be.
Psalm 37 directly addresses that.
It instructs us not to be afraid, to trust in God, stay committed to Him, and wait patiently.
The word fret shows up multiple times because worrying about a decision rarely makes it clearer. It just makes it seem even scarier.
The Bible reminds us again to look at the big picture, seeking to make decisions that will benefit us in the long-term.
Rushing to make a choice is the quickest way to make a mistake.
Psalm 37 also calls us to remember that our timing isn’t the only one that matters. God’s timing determines when our decisions produce results.
Wisdom can look like quick action sometimes. However, often, it looks like patience.
5. Isaiah 30
Isaiah 30 has a line about a voice that follows us everywhere, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” whenever we’re tempted by too many options.
Here, the Bible teaches us that we must listen in order to receive direction. It’s rarely obvious.
This chapter also warns us not to rely on our own strength. We need to allow God to inspire and guide us toward wiser decisions.
And that takes time and prayer.
It’s not an easy thing to do when you’re anxious, but they are the best.
6. Proverbs 4
Proverbs 4 is filled with urgency around guarding your heart and staying away from the wrong path.
The Bible tells us that receiving direction is only the beginning. You’re not all set. You need to stay present and patient, pray, and continue to seek God’s wisdom.
Temptation and distraction can still sway you, even when you know where you’re going.
The part about protecting your heart above all else is especially valuable to anyone looking to make wiser decisions.
It reminds us that the decision we end up making needs to serve our purpose and align with what’s important to us.
There are choices that are logical but feel wrong.
This is God letting you know that you’re about to choose wrong.
7. Psalm 25
Psalm 25 contains so much humility, and it’s an amazing prayer to turn to when you need to make a decision.
David doesn’t outright demand answers from God; he asks to be taught and shown His ways.
The wisdom of this Bible chapter can save you when you’re stuck.
It teaches us to keep an open mind and accept that guidance requires our effortTambién.
God can’t inspire those who refuse to be taught and inspired.
So, be humble. Don’t expect the answers to come to you right away just because you asked.
In Psalm 25, there’s also talk of past mistakes, and this is also something that can impact decision-making.
The Bible recognizes that we might make certain choices because of our sins from the past. Some people hesitate with prayer and belief because they think they’re not worthy of God’s love.
Psalm 25 reminds us that sin is cleared when we ask for forgiveness and mean it.
So, if this feels like something that might be making wise decisions difficult for you, remember to ask God to forgive you so you can forgive yourself.
8. James 4
Through James 4, the Bible teaches us that we’re not in a position to take anything for granted. This also goes for our decisions.
Instead of proclaiming exactly what you’re going to do tomorrow or next week, leave some room for God in your plans.
You might say, “If it’s His will.”
This isn’t without a reason, of course. Allowing some room for God’s will makes us hold our future plans loosely.
In simple terms, we don’t put all our eggs in one basket!
When you make one plan and refuse to budge, that’s your pride speaking. You believe that things have to play out exactly as you want.
Sometimes, plans fall through. And when they do, it’s better to be ready and peaceful than resentful.
9. Colossians 3
Colossians 3 calls us to set our minds on things beyond this world. You might wonder how this is useful, but give it a moment.
Truly wise decisions get you results that work. When you make a choice that’s aligned with your values, nothing that happens in the futuro puede shake it.
If you’re too focused on immediate pressures, you might make some calls that could come back to bite you later.
The Bible also talks about carácter here. Understand what kind of person you want to be, and allow your decisions to reflect that.
Do you wish to become kinder, more forgiving, humble, or patient?
Each new decision you make is a new chance to become those things. View them as the opportunities God keeps sending your way!
10. Romans 12
Romans 12 advises us not to conform ourselves to what’s considered normal and acceptable to this world.
Instead, we should seek to transform our way of thinking through God.
Your wisdom is built on this transformation.
You can’t embody it if your mind is cluttered with comparison and hustle.
Devote your thoughts to the eternal.
In this chapter, the Bible gives us another lesson on humility. Don’t let wisdom become some abstract thing you preach but never practice.
Also, don’t wait for big moments to embody true wisdom. Instead, practice it in small ways, each and every day.
