A stressful day might leave someone feeling disconnected from themselves. Rituals help interrupt that disconnection and add a feel-good moment, even if it is just for a little while.
“Spells” are about changing how you view the world and help you feel happy in your life. They’re about creating playful, comforting behaviors to change one’s mood, focus, and emotional state.
One of the cool things about little “spells” is just how well they can work during chaotic times. At times, only a small emotional reset can change an entire day, more than any large, dramatic change. Here are some small spells that work very well when a person is stressed out.
1. The Cold Water Reset Spell
One of these spells is running cold water over your hands for a few seconds while saying, “This feeling is leaving me now.” There is much that can be accomplished with this simple act.
For example, a person who is feeling anxious can interrupt that anxious thought pattern by physically touching or splashing their face with cool water.
You can think of this as restarting your nervous system before moving into a stressful conversation, meeting, or emotionally charged situation.
2. The Cinnamon Coffee Spell
Another example of a small ritual you can use as a moment of calm is putting cinnamon in your coffee/tea before drinking it while thinking about something you want more of today, such as calmness, self-confidence, energy, or patience.
Cinnamon has been symbolically connected to warmth, luck, and attraction in many cultures long before our time.
Intentional rituals create powerful shifts in your mindset, even if you don’t believe in actual magic.
3. The “Open the Window” Spell
Open a window for at least one minute when you are having a bad day; visualize the air leaving stale energy behind, and use the words, “Anything that doesn’t belong to me can leave me now.”
You will find that fresh air will lift your mood and physical tension much faster than you think. This technique is especially powerful after you have spent time arguing, have just received bad news, or after a long, tiring day at work.
Many people overlook how much stress is affected by their environment. Physical changes can help you shift your emotions. A single change in air quality in a given room has a significant impact on the way you feel emotionally.
4. The Protective Pocket Spell
Carry one small object with you in your pocket that brings you comfort. It could be a stone, a coin, a charm, a ring, a shell, or even a piece of paper that is folded over.
When you are feeling stressed, lightly touch the object and concentrate on your breathing. Many cultures throughout history have used small objects as emotional anchors during times of uncertainty and anxiety.
The real “magic” comes from the association and repetition formed between this object and feelings of calmness in your mind. These small grounding rituals can make a significant difference in how you handle stressful days.
5. The Shower Drain Spell
When taking a shower, imagine all of the stress in your body going down the drain and disappearing from your body. Many people use phrases like “I let go of what I cannot control” as a way to help cope with challenges.
Warm water relaxes muscles and reduces tension, both of which also tend to help create an emotional feeling of calmness. Stress builds up in the body before there is mental stress.
Using showers during your daily transition from a tough day to the evening allows more distance emotionally from the negative aspects of each day.
6. Candle and Playlist Spell
Light a candle when you need calmness or emotional comfort, and only listen to one particular playlist for a combination of scents and music.
Your brain will naturally associate that combination with relaxation and, therefore, provide a very strong emotional cue to assist you during high-stress situations.
This ritual works better when done consistently. Smells and sounds provide more impact on emotional memory than most realize and, in fact, can assist in creating a better mood much quicker than logic can during a high-stress workday.
7. Write and Rip Spell
Quickly write your stress or fear down on paper (don’t overthink it), then rip the piece of paper into small pieces and throw them away on purpose.
The action of doing this creates a physical feeling of emotional release. Some people choose to even flush the paper down the toilet, burn it safely, or do so in some other symbolic way to indicate the same thing.
This ritual works because once the emotion has been expressed physically, it is no longer trapped.
8. The Salt Circle Bath Spell
In warm water, add a handful of salt and visualize the stress from your daily life dissolving away into the water. If you are unable to soak in the tub, soaking your feet will provide a similar effect as well.
Salt is commonly used in protector rituales from many cultures, representing cleansing, both physically and spiritually.
While taking a salt bath, do not check your phone; allow your mind some time without any stimulation.
9. Lucky Outfit Spell
Choose an outfit, sweater, perfume, or accessory that has always provided you with a sense of emotional empowerment. Intentionally wear that outfit on high-stress days.
Many people create “lucky” clothes without consciously thinking about why they do it; however, your brain forms a connection between particular clothing and being confident, being secure, or being protected.
Wearing one particular clothing item on anxious days creates an emotional connection to familiarity once again. People who think fashion seems shallow do not consider that small sensory comforts can greatly assist in decreasing stress.
10. The Midnight “Starting Over” Spell
Before going to bed, for one minute, stand silently in a dark room and state, “Tomorrow does not have to feel like today,” then go to bed. This is the entire spell.
In almost all cases, stress convinces you that bad feelings will last until the end of time. Creating the reminder at this time will stop your thinking regarding the previous day from continuing on the following evening.
Sometimes, simply practicing a small ritual at this time provides hope to you and, thereby, relief from stress.
Born and raised in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Ever since I was a little girl, my imagination knew no bounds. I remember vividly how I’d scribble down short stories, each page bursting with adventures and characters conjured up from the whimsy of my mind. These stories weren’t just for me; they were my way of connecting with my friends, offering them a slice of my fantasy world during our playtimes. The joy and excitement on their faces as we dived into my fictional realms motivated me to keep writing. This early passion for storytelling naturally evolved into my pursuit of writing, turning a childhood hobby into a fulfilling career.
