Bottlenose dolphins develop signature whistles, and some parrots have distinctive contact calls.

Another animal can get an individual’s attention by copying that signature, rather like calling you with an impression of your own voice.

Elephants don’t appear to work that way. Among the calls that let researchers compare the relevant voices, most were less similar to the receiver than that caller’s sounds usually were.

Even then, the model could still find clues to the intended elephant, suggesting that the label wasn’t just an imitation.

If that result holds up, the system comes closer to human naming.

Nothing about the sound “Maria” naturally resembles Maria. Family groups split apart and reunite, while individuals carry close relationships across long lives.

When an important companion is more than 50 meters away and hidden from view, a general announcement only gets you so far. A call aimed at one distant relative becomes a message.

And that fits the results rather neatly. Receiver identity appeared most clearly in long-distance contact calls and in caregiving rumbles used by females tending to calves.

It was far less clear in greetings exchanged at close range, where the intended listener was already within touching distance.

Calls from adult females also gave the model more success than those from juveniles.

The researchers raised a lovely possibility that still needs testing. Young elephants could take years to master the system, perhaps hearing their own labels woven into the comforting rumbles of the adults caring for them.

7.
