Younger members have kicked out their elders, and the entire congregation was about to fall apart.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, Clement was a leader in the Roman church who wrote a letter (<a href=\"https:\/\/sacred-texts.com\/bib\/lbob\/lbob15.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clement 1<\/a>) in which he reasoned why the <strong>church needed hierarchy<\/strong> and what that should look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the letter, he quoted the Old Testament, which gave his reasons more weight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This letter is also an important historical proof that, within one generation of apostles, the Christian church already included a complex network between <strong>different cities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was also succession among the apostles, as Clement was Peter&rsquo;s disciple and a Pope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. He was a bishop from Antioch around <strong>107 AD<\/strong>, and he was being taken to Rome to be thrown to wild beasts!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of worrying about his own life, he made sure to <strong>dictate letters<\/strong> to the churches he passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&rsquo;s urgency in those letters; they reflect his desire to do something important while he&rsquo;s still breathing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the letters, he begs Christians to stay unified under their bishops and reject docetism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&rsquo;s also the one who <strong>coined the titles<\/strong> of positions within the church, like bishop and presbyter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ignatius also welcomed martyrdom, asking Roman Christians not to try to save him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. He said that he preferred living testimony over written books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This makes him one of history&rsquo;s earliest <strong>oral historians<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, he reveals how the&nbsp;Gospels of Mark and Matthew came to be written, at least according to what he was told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was obsessed, but he also understood the importance of preserving firsthand memory before it was lost forever.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Just one fragment survived and was quoted by Eusebius, centuries later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it&rsquo;s believed that Quadratus was the <strong>first Christian apologist<\/strong>! He wrote letters to Emperor Hadrian in defense of the religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christianity was looked upon with hostility at the time, but this man took it upon himself to defend it before the most powerful man in the world!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the fragment that survived, he argues that the people Jesus raised and healed lived in His time. His <strong>milagros<\/strong> weren&rsquo;t legends; they were <strong>witnessed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. He explored Stoicism, as well as the teachings of Aristotle and Plato, but none of them felt right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One day, he met an old man on the beach, who pointed him to the Hebrew prophets and Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon learning more, he decided that Christianity was <strong>the true philosophy<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/fathers\/0126.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">First Apology<\/a> (150 AD), addressed to the emperor, he gives details about Christian ethics and worship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/fathers\/0128.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dialogue with Trypho<\/a>, he explains how Christ fulfills Hebrew scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also ran a school in Rome where he<strong> openly taught<\/strong> Christian philosophy, in public and under his own name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 165 AD, he was beheaded for refusing to sacrifice to Roman gods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Tatian had managed to combine them all without losing anything essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For centuries, his Diatessaron was the standard text used in worship in parts of the Eastern Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. He wrote about Christianity <strong>in Latin<\/strong>, which was important, since most apologists wrote in Greek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, he actually invented a huge part of Western Christian vocabulary!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/fathers\/0301.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apology<\/a>, around 197 AD, he uses sarcasm to argue against Roman persecution. His famous line, &ldquo;blood of martyrs is the seed of the church,&rdquo; also comes from here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/fathers\/03121.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Against Marcion<\/a>, he argues against the claim that the God of the Old Testament and Jesus Christ are two different deities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tertullian was combative and rigorous in his faith, which could be why he ended up joining<strong> the Montanist movement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He drifted away from the traditional church, but he also helped establish Western Christianity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">13. His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/fathers\/1015.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commentary on John<\/a> is considered a masterpiece!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Origen taught that scripture had multiple layers of meaning: <strong>literal, moral, <\/strong>y <strong>espiritual<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was tortured during the Decian persecution and died from his injuries around 253 AD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Posthumously, Origen was declared a <strong>heretic<\/strong> for his ideas that the entire universe could eventually be saved.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">14. At some point, he became a rival bishop to the actual bishop of Rome!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This schism was solved only after they had both been <strong>exiled<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His legacy is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/fathers\/0501.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Refutation of All Heresies<\/a> (between 170 and 235 AD). This is actually a catalog of all heretical and <strong>pagan philosophies<\/strong> he could document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It includes Gnosticism, astrology, magic, Greek philosophical schools&hellip;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naturally, he didn&rsquo;t simply name these philosophies; he also argued against them all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His work is extremely valuable to historians because he quoted his opponents at length before making his arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By doing this, he had <strong>preserved <\/strong>numerosos <strong>fragments<\/strong> and quotes that would have otherwise been lost forever.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">15. Should they be allowed back in church or denied?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his work <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/fathers\/050701.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">On the Unity of the Church<\/a>, Cyprian argued for everyone to find <strong>the middle ground<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also warned against the <strong>danger of schism<\/strong>, understanding how it could weaken the entire religion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When persecution started again under Emperor Valerian, Cyprian was martyred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">16. There was <strong>persecution<\/strong>, a <strong>plague<\/strong>y el <strong>civil war<\/strong> was raging all around the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dionysius devoted himself to helping the sick and the dying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His theological significance lies in his letters on the Trinity (between 200 and 265 AD). In them, he was trying to describe the relationship between the Father and the Son.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was a difficult task, since he had to <strong>combat heresy<\/strong> without overcorrecting and becoming a heretic himself!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sabellianism claimed that the Father and the Son were exactly the same, and Dionysius tried to highlight how different the two were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In doing so, he provoked criticism that he made the Son seem lesser.&nbsp;He explained himself in later writing.&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jesus and His disciples established the foundations of the early Church.
