She shared the throne with her younger brother, Ptolemy XIII, in accordance with the political and dynastic customs of her family. While modern siblings might argue about who gets the bigger bedroom, the Ptolemaic royal family had considerably more serious disagreements. These involved armies, political alliances, exile, and occasionally murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cleopatra&rsquo;s early reign was far from peaceful. Cleopatra, who had been pushed out of power by her brother&rsquo;s supporters, needed a way to meet Caesar without being intercepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to ancient accounts, she arranged to be brought into Caesar&rsquo;s presence concealed in a rolled-up piece of bedding or a carpet. The dramatic image of Cleopatra emerging from a carpet has become a favorite scene in films and paintings. The exact details of the story may have been embellished over time, but ancient sources do describe her secret arrival and meeting with Caesar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cleverness of the episode lies in its political purpose. Cleopatra was not simply making a theatrical entrance for entertainment. She was seeking the support of a powerful Roman leader who could influence her future.
