This wasn&rsquo;t a bare defensive chamber where someone happened to place a bed. It had been planned for daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">And the fire didn&rsquo;t only heat the air immediately in front of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">As English Heritage explains, castle fireplaces also warmed the surrounding stone, allowing some of that heat to radiate back into the chamber after the flames weakened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It still wouldn&rsquo;t feel like a modern heated bedroom, especially during a bitter winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with the door shut and the fire burning for hours before bedtime, the room could become far more comfortable than the ruined stone interiors we walk through today suggest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Wealthy households carried valuable tapestries between residences, using them to transform whichever castle or manor they currently occupied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Those hangings were beautiful, but they also softened one of the coldest parts of the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">A layer of thick fabric prevented occupants from sitting or sleeping beside exposed stone and helped reduce the cold radiating from the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">English Heritage specifically notes that medieval tapestries provided much-needed insulation inside chilly castle chambers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Windows were another weak point, especially when glass was absent or limited. Wooden shutters could be closed at night, while fabric placed around openings helped reduce the drafts that slipped through every gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room still breathed cold air, but far less of it reached the bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. The fabric also blocked drafts and offered privacy in rooms that were often shared with attendants, children, or guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Bed curtains appeared in England as early as the 11th century, while elaborate canopied beds had become part of elite households by the 14th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">And despite how grand they eventually became, their purpose wasn&rsquo;t entirely decorative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">A properly enclosed bed worked almost like a tent. The room outside could remain unpleasantly cold while the small space between the curtains slowly warmed around the people sleeping inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">That also explains why a bed could be one of the most valuable objects a household owned. It wasn&rsquo;t simply furniture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a freezing night, it was architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. For servants, soldiers, and workers, it could mean finding a place close to other people and away from the worst drafts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Either way, solitude was often colder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. The fire warmed the stone. Tapestries covered the walls, shutters closed the windows, and curtains enclosed the bed. Feather, straw, wool, and fur slowed the escape of heat, while other sleepers added warmth of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">And people were accustomed to indoor temperatures that would feel miserable to many of us now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">They didn&rsquo;t defeat the cold so much as reduce the amount of space in which they had to fight it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The castle could freeze around them, but behind the heavy curtains of a well-prepared bed, they had created a warmer world small enough to survive until morning.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Medieval castles were cold, drafty, and built long before anyone could turn a dial and heat an entire room.
