Sometimes they were excluded because of the social norms of their time. Other times, they worked behind the scenes while male colleagues received the praise, awards, and headlines.

Thankfully, many of these women are finally receiving the recognition they always deserved, even if it came decades—or centuries—too late. Their stories remind us that history isn’t just about who made the discoveries, but also about who got credit for making them. Here are ten remarkable women who helped shape the world, even though their names were left out of the history books for far too long.

1. What many don’t realize is that one of the most important pieces of evidence came from British chemist and X-ray crystallographer Rosalind Franklin.

Franklin produced an incredibly detailed X-ray diffraction image known as “Photo 51,” which clearly revealed DNA’s spiral structure. Without her knowledge, the image was shown to Watson, who immediately recognized its importance. The information played a crucial role in helping Watson and Crick build their famous DNA model.

When the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded in 1962, Franklin had already passed away from ovarian cancer at the age of 37, and Nobel Prizes are not awarded posthumously. For years, her role received little public attention, with many accounts portraying her as a minor contributor. Today, historians widely acknowledge that her research was fundamental to one of the greatest scientific discoveries of the twentieth century. Sometimes the most important picture in science wasn’t the one everyone remembered—it was the one almost nobody talked about.

2. Together they made significant discoveries, but when Hahn’s experiments led to the discovery of nuclear fission, Meitner was forced to flee Nazi Germany because she was Jewish.

While living in exile in Sweden, Meitner and her nephew Otto Frisch correctly explained the scientific process behind nuclear fission and even coined the term. Their explanation transformed an experimental observation into one of the most important breakthroughs in modern physics.

In 1944, Otto Hahn alone received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Meitner’s enormous contribution was overlooked despite her essential role in interpreting the results. She never accepted involvement in developing nuclear weapons, earning the nickname “the mother of the atomic bomb who never built it”—a title she personally disliked. Today, Meitner is celebrated as one of the greatest physicists of the twentieth century, and element 109, meitnerium, was named in her honor. She was a young mother whose cancer cells unexpectedly became one of the most important tools in medical history.

In 1951, doctors at a Baltimore hospital collected her cancer cells without her knowledge or consent, which was a common but ethically questionable practice at the time. Unlike most cells, hers continued dividing indefinitely in laboratory conditions. These “HeLa cells” became the first immortal human cell line.

Scientists have used HeLa cells to develop the polio vaccine, study cancer, improve fertility treatments, advance gene research, test medications, and contribute to countless medical breakthroughs. Billions of HeLa cells have been grown and distributed worldwide.

For decades, Henrietta Lacks and her family received no recognition and had little understanding of how influential her cells had become. Her story eventually sparked important discussions about informed consent, patient rights, and medical ethics. She never knew she would help save millions of lives, yet her contribution continues to shape modern medicine every single day.

4. That’s essentially what mathematician Ada Lovelace accomplished.

Working with inventor Charles Babbage on his proposed Analytical Engine—a mechanical computing machine that was never fully built during their lifetimes—Lovelace realized the machine could do far more than solve mathematical problems. She envisioned it manipulating symbols, composing music, and performing a wide variety of logical operations.

While translating an article about Babbage’s machine, Lovelace added extensive notes that became far longer than the original article itself. Among those notes was what is widely recognized as the first published algorithm intended for implementation on such a machine, leading many historians to call her the world’s first computer programmer.

For many years, Babbage received nearly all the attention while Lovelace’s visionary ideas were largely overlooked. It was an astonishing claim, but someone had to test it experimentally.

Wu designed and carried out the extraordinarily difficult experiment that demonstrated the prediction was correct. Her work fundamentally changed physicists’ understanding of the universe.

Lee and Yang received the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics for the theoretical prediction, but Wu was excluded despite providing the experimental proof that convinced the scientific community. Many historians of science consider this one of the most significant Nobel omissions in modern physics. Fortunately, Wu later received numerous prestigious honors, although many believe the Nobel should have included her from the beginning.

6. Few realize that one of the scientists responsible for discovering this was geneticist Nettie Stevens.

In the early twentieth century, many researchers believed environmental conditions determined whether offspring became male or female. Stevens carefully studied mealworm chromosomes under the microscope and demonstrated that males carried two different sex chromosomes while females carried matching pairs.

Her findings revolutionized genetics and developmental biology. Around the same time, another scientist, Edmund Beecher Wilson, reached similar conclusions, but Stevens’ meticulous research often received less attention than that of her male contemporaries.

She died only a few years after making her groundbreaking discovery, limiting her opportunity to build an even greater scientific reputation. Today, historians widely recognize Stevens as one of the pioneers of modern genetics whose work transformed our understanding of heredity.

7. Yet she became one of history’s greatest fossil hunters.

Along England’s Jurassic Coast, Anning discovered spectacular fossils, including the first correctly identified ichthyosaur skeleton, one of the earliest plesiosaur skeletons, and important pterosaur remains. These discoveries transformed scientists’ understanding of prehistoric life and contributed to growing acceptance that many species had gone extinct.

Despite supplying museums and wealthy collectors with extraordinary fossils, Anning was rarely admitted into scientific societies, and male scientists often published research based on her discoveries without giving her full credit.

Today, she is widely recognized as one of the founders of paleontology. Few realized she was also an accomplished inventor.

During World War II, Lamarr and composer George Antheil developed a “frequency-hopping” communication system intended to prevent enemy forces from jamming radio-controlled torpedoes. Although the U.S. military did not immediately adopt the invention, the underlying concept became highly influential decades later.

Modern technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and certain forms of secure wireless communication rely on principles related to spread-spectrum and frequency-hopping techniques that trace part of their development back to Lamarr’s patent.

For many years, her scientific contribution was overshadowed by her acting career, and she received little recognition as an inventor. Only later in life did the engineering community celebrate her achievements.
