Quite frankly, everything about it suggests you should probably keep your distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">But for centuries, people running from the law reached for that terrifying face on purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And grabbing its ring could buy them exactly 37 days of protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. When somebody grabbed the ring, he could see what was happening and ring a bell to announce that sanctuary had been claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">So there was no knock for people outside to hear. It was the touch that mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">And that touch connected the fugitive to an extraordinary bronze object dating back to the 1100s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">The whole thing weighs roughly 66 pounds and features a lion swallowing a man while a double-headed snake bites the man&rsquo;s dangling feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">It was supposed to look frightening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The design drew on the medieval idea of the Hellmouth, a monstrous entrance to hell. Somehow, that terrifying image became a doorway to temporary safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The ring simply helped make that request visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Durham was especially appealing because its protection was closely associated with Saint Cuthbert. His shrine made the cathedral one of northern England&rsquo;s most important religious centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">People trusted that protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Some traveled surprisingly long distances to reach Durham, passing other churches along the way. They wanted this particular place and the security connected to its famous saint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">A royal coroner was also available there, making the legal side of sanctuary easier to arrange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So Durham offered more than somewhere to hide. It offered an organized system for deciding what happened next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. It was quite the opposite, actually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">The fugitive was given a black gown with a yellow cross on the shoulder. That cross identified the person as being under the protection of the Church and Saint Cuthbert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone who saw the outfit would know what it meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">The monks also provided food and drink. According to the cathedral, sanctuary seekers stayed in a small room beneath its southwest tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn&rsquo;t exactly luxurious. But for someone worried about arrest or retaliation, a protected room and regular meals probably felt that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">There was another important difference between sanctuary and simply escaping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone knew where the person was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gown made that clear. So did the bell, which publicly announced that someone had entered the cathedral&rsquo;s protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Many insisted they&rsquo;d acted in self-defense after an argument or attack turned violent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">And not everyone had already been convicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Historian Krista Kesselring examined Durham&rsquo;s sanctuary records and found petitions involving 283 men connected to 195 homicides between 1464 and 1524.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Among them were Thomas Huchenson and his son Robert, who came to the cathedral after Robert killed someone during a fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">The record says they arrived with &ldquo;great sadness of the heart.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Other cases were harder to sympathize with. One man, Thomas Spense, sought protection after ordering another man to be hanged without a lawful trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Some people confessed to killings that had happened years earlier. In one case, the death had occurred 26 years before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the ring didn&rsquo;t only attract people fleeing an immediate chase. Sometimes, the trouble had been following them for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Durham had its own unusual limit: 37 days and nights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">But why 37?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">According to local tradition, Saint Cuthbert appeared in a vision to the Viking king Guthred and set the time limit himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Whether that vision really happened is a matter of belief and legend. Still, the 37-day rule became an important part of Durham&rsquo;s sanctuary tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Those weeks gave everyone involved time to step back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">An angry family might calm down, while a legal official could review the situation. The person seeking protection could also think about what came next without facing immediate punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">The arrangement wasn&rsquo;t a pardon. It didn&rsquo;t erase the accusation or undo the crime. But it did create a breathing space between a dangerous moment and a final decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when those 37 days were up, that decision could no longer wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Or they could confess and agree to leave England, promising never to return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">That second option sounds a lot like freedom until you think about what it actually involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Exile meant walking away from home and whatever life the person had built there. It could also mean leaving family behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">A royal coroner selected the port where the fugitive had to depart. Most people from Durham were directed toward Hartlepool, roughly 20 miles away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">That was difficult enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">But the cathedral records one person who was sent all the way to Dover, approximately 350 miles from Durham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">To arrive within the allowed time, that fugitive would&rsquo;ve needed to cover about 30 miles a day on foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the ring could save somebody from immediate punishment, but it couldn&rsquo;t promise that the road ahead would be easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Its legal power was gone, but the object itself survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Visitors to Durham Cathedral can still see a version of the famous ring on the north door today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">But it isn&rsquo;t the original.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">The ring outside is a replica installed in 1980. The original 12th-century bronze ring is now kept inside Durham Cathedral Museum, where it&rsquo;s protected from further wear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Its lion still bares its teeth. The man&rsquo;s legs still hang below it, and the snakes still bite at his feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">It&rsquo;s an extraordinary piece of medieval craftsmanship.
