King Solomon is one of the most complicated figures in all of religious history.
By nearly every account, he was the wisest man who ever lived and the wealthiest king of his time. He built the Temple that defined an entire civilization; he was a poet and a judge.
However, we don’t actually know how Solomon came to be so wise and so wealthy.
The legend of his ring tried to answer these questions. It speaks of mysterious deals with spirits and dominion over demons.
It remains one of the most fascinating stories of the ancient world!
1. The Ring
Solomon’s ring remained a popular topic across centuries. Various traditions described it, and interestingly, all the descriptions are more or less consistent.
Most accounts describe a seal ring with an engraved symbol. The symbol is described as a six-pointed star formed by two interlocking triangles, which later became known as the ダヴィデの星.
Some versions describe the ring as having four gemstones, each one symbolizing dominion over something.
For instance, Islamic tradition suggests the ring came directly from heaven, delivered to the king by the angel Gabriel.
Jewish stories also explain the ring as a divine gift rather than something that was made by humans.
It was believed that the ring served as a channel for cosmic authority, holding more power than a whole army!
2. The Testament of Solomon
について Testament of Solomon is the text that directly connects the king to demons.
It’s pseudepigraphal, meaning that the author pretended to be Solomon himself to make the text appear more important.
However, we know for certain that it was written between the 1st and 5th centuries AD.
It describes how the king summoned demons with his ring, interrogating them about their names, powers, weaknesses, etc.
Then, he assigned them to work on the construction of the Temple.
The text lists numerous demons: those who cause illness or conflict, or drive people to addiction.
Each one was compelled by the ring to submit to the king’s authority.
Though the Testament isn’t canonical, its influence on the later occult tradition was enormous.
3. How the Ring Controlled Demons
The belief that Solomon’s ring granted him the power over demons followed a specific logic.
The ring bore the name of God (Tetragrammaton), and so knowing the name of God allowed the king to wield divine authority.
You’re likely familiar with the belief that knowing the name of someone or something grants you control over it.
So, demons couldn’t resist the power of the ring because it represented a command from the very source, 神様, not Solomon himself.
The ring is also present in Islamic tradition, where it’s called Khātam Sulaymān.
It’s described as a gift from God that allowed the king to control demons, winds, animals…
4. The Many Foreign Wives of Solomon
This is where the connection between the king’s supernatural dealings and spiritual downfall comes together.
The Book of Kings tells us plainly that Solomon, for all his legendary wisdom, made a political decision that would ruin everything: he married hundreds of foreign women.
They were daughters of neighboring kings and rulers, and they all brought their own beliefs into Israel.
To accommodate them, the king allowed the worship of false gods, but he even went beyond that.
He built high places and altars around Jerusalem devoted to Chemosh, Molech, Ashtoreth, and others.
The false worship was even done in the Temple, which God specifically forbade.
The judgment was that his kingdom would be taken from his descendants after his death, essentially destroying the legacy he spent his life building.
5. The False Gods
The specific deities Solomon allowed were the exact ones the prophets had been warning Israel against.
Ashtoreth, the goddess of fertility and war, was part of the Canaanite religion that had tempted Israel from the very beginning!
Chemosh of Moab was a national deity associated with both war and child sacrifice. Molech was similarly terrible, known for the fire rituals.
And all of these cults were active, with their own priests and rituals. Their practices directly opposed everything that King David established.
The irony is incredible: Solomon wrote Proverbs about straying from God‘s path, then quite literally strayed himself.
6. Which Demons Are Connected to Him?
The Testament of Solomon includes specific demon names that continue to influence occult tradition to this day.
Asmodeus might be the most recognizable name; he’s the demon of lust and destruction, who was bound by the king and forced to help build the Temple.
The Testament describes his power as so great that it almost matched Solomon’s, as did his cunning.
Ornias is the first demon the king encounters in the text. He’s described as a vampiric being who was draining a young boy’s strength when he was overpowered by the ring.
Beelzebub そして Lilith appear later in association with the ring.
7. Was His Wealth Connected to Demons?
This question has floated around for centuries in occult circles.
The sheer scale of his wealth is hardly imaginable today: there was gold by the ton, silver was as common as stone, a fleet of ships brought treasures from exotic places…
The Temple itself, by biblical description, was decorated with so much gold that it’s hard to envision!
It’s suggested that Solomon’s dominion over demons allowed him to learn secret locations of treasures, alchemical secrets, and that he opened trade routes with supernatural help.
None of this is in scripture, but the curiosity has created numerous legends about his wealth.
8. The Root of His Wisdom
Solomon’s wisdom, like his wealth, carries a supernatural quality. Its true source is debated in both scripture and legend.
The Bible says God appeared to Solomon in a dream and offered him anything he desired, and the king asked for wisdom.
He wanted to lead his people well, and since his wish was so selfless, God granted it.
This is the foundational story, and it’s included in the scripture.
However, later traditions expanded upon it.
Kabbalah associated Solomon with knowledge of divine names and angelic hierarchies. Islamic tradition credits him with understanding the language of animals!
He’s envisioned as the master of the unseen, and to many people, the unseen means demons.
9. The Warning
The ring was eventually lost, and as mentioned before, Solomon’s legacy fell apart after his death.
Different traditions attempted to explain his downfall.
The Testament describes how the first demon, Ornias, tricked a servant into handing him the ring and then wreaked chaos until the king managed to get it back.
In Islamic folklore, a demon Sakhr, stole the ring while the king was bathing and went on to impersonate him on the throne.
In Jewish tradition, the ring was taken back after Solomon’s spiritual decline.
The ring was never his to begin with; God had entrusted it to him, but the king betrayed that trust when he allowed the worship of false gods.
