The name Lucifer instantly reminds us of the fall and paradise lost, but I would like to explore this fallen angel beyond his crime.
Who was he before refusing to bow to God’s creation, before turning into a snake and tempting Eve?
The answer typically consists of calling him God’s most beautiful and perfect angel, but honestly, that tells us nothing.
Let’s see who Lucifer was before the events of the Bible!
1. The Perfect Creation
Lucifer was intentionally created by God, along with the other angels.
The Bible doesn’t tell us exactly when God created His angels, but it’s clear that they already existed before He made the Earth.
According to Ezekiel 28, he was created absolutely perfect. The scriptures describe him as “full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.”
He definitely stood out even among angels, noted for his flawless holiness.
He was likely the greatest being God had created at that point. He was the gold standard of celestial beings, considered the Creator’s first masterpiece!
2. A Covering Cherub
Beyond his appearance, Lucifer also held an important position in the heavenly hierarchy.
Ezekiel 14-15 tells us exactly what he did. He describes Lucifer as an anointed cherub, specifically a “covering cherub.”
In other words, he protected and guarded God’s 所有する throne!
It implies an intimacy with the divine presence that almost no other being was permitted to experience.
Pop culture often portrays him as God’s favorite son before the fall, and it’s not wrong.
This role of his required a level of purity and trust that we can’t even imagine. All of this shows how favored and respected he was.
3. Lucifer’s Worship and Music
Though each individual angel is tasked with specific missions, they all have one primary role, and that’s constant worship.
Lucifer was no different.
Aside from being a warrior and a guardian, he also led worship.
Actually, Ezekiel 28 includes a fascinating detail, saying that he was created with timbrels and pipes built right into his being.
He was essentially living music, designed to praise the Creator. His melodies and adoration reflected the glory of God!
It’s likely that every move he made produced harmonies that resonated throughout the cosmos!
4. His Authority
Because of his unmatched beauty and his role as the covering cherub, Lucifer naturally enjoyed enormous authority.
Most likely, he was a leader of the angelic host!
And since God placed so much trust in him, it’s possible that he was also overseeing large portions of the created universe, directly commanding armies of angels.
To be given this level of power, Lucifer had to have proven his competence and his loyalty to the Creator.
He held this honorable, respectable position, which puts in perspective just how devastating his betrayal was!
5. The Gift of Free Will
Despite being created perfectly holy as the beings of light, angels also enjoyed free will, just like we do.
Lucifer was naturally blessed with his own free will, too.
This detail is crucial because without it, love, worship, belief, and obedience mean next to nothing.
God desired genuine and voluntary devotion from His creations, and this needed to include the option to turn away from Him.
Lucifer was created good, but since he had the freedom of choice, all of his loyalty and devotion were his conscious choice.
He always had the capacity for rebellion because true love requires the freedom to leave.
6. Not All Angels Were Created Equal
Heaven exists in a hierarchy, so it wasn’t possible for all angels to enjoy equal power.
Lucifer’s position as the covering cherub came with much greater stakes. Because he was so high up in the hierarchy, his choices carried a lot more weight.
His status gave him a greater perspective and understanding of the cosmos.
This knowledge comes with bigger accountability.
If an angel of a lower rank rebelled, it would still be a tragedy, but his rebellion was cataclysmic!
He had more opportunity to see the glory of God, but on the other hand, being elevated so high fueled his pride.
He was standing too close to the light.
7. His Pride and Ambition
Lucifer was created brilliant and perfect, and knowing this about himself led him to turn prideful.
Isaiah 14 presents us with the angel’s inner thoughts; he looked at his beauty, his wisdom, and power, and something inside of him changed.
He started wondering why he wouldn’t just have his own throne right alongside God or even above Him!
He actually declared that he would ascend into heaven and make himself like the Most High!
Unlike Adam and Eve, Lucifer wasn’t tempted by some external evil; his 汚職 was completely 内部!
His ambition blinded him to the fact that his greatness was created by God and not something he had achieved himself.
Instead of seeing God in his perfection, he just saw himself.
8. The Fall
When the moment of rebellion finally came, it was Lucifer’s conscious decision to oppose God.
This moment is often presented as him simply refusing to bow to the first humans, but he actually abused his influence and gathered angels to openly rebel against the Creator!
Despite all his brilliance, he made a foolish attempt at usurping God’s throne instead of enjoying all the blessings and privileges he was being given.
When you learn of the relationship he had with God, you can see just how hurtful his betrayal was. He was the most trusted, most perfect angel, and yet, he chose defiance.
He weaponized the free will that God had given him.
9. Becoming the Devil We Know
The aftermath of this cosmic uprising literally split the heavens in half!
A third of the angels chose to follow Lucifer, and they became his demonic horde.
The remaining angels who didn’t rebel used their free will to make the right choice. They chose to remain loyal to God.
Lucifer’s story doesn’t end here, as we know.
Upon losing his glory, his spite led him to become the tempter of Eve in the Garden of Eden. He tried to corrupt God’s newest creation just as he was corrupt.
From being the most brilliant angel, he became the adversary of all creation!
He became drunk on power and pride, and in the end, they ruined him.
