It’s commonly known as Nagoshi no Ōharae, or the Great Summer Purification.

The timing is key.

By then, half the year has already passed. The ritual offers a chance to symbolically clear away whatever has built up since January and move into the remaining months with a fresh start.

A similar ceremony takes place at the end of December. That one looks back over the second half of the year and prepares people for the year ahead.

So the tradition isn’t necessarily saying someone has done anything terrible.

It recognizes that everyday life can leave people feeling weighed down, unsettled, or simply in need of a reset.

Twice a year, there’s a moment to stop, acknowledge that, and let something go.

5. But there’s a historical connection.

Japan’s Doll Festival, known as Hinamatsuri, takes place on March 3 and is associated with prayers for children’s health and happiness, particularly girls.

According to the Kyoto National Museum, the festival grew out of older purification customs involving paper or wooden figures that absorbed impurities before being sent away.

Over time, those traditions became connected with children’s dolls.

By the Edo period, elaborate doll displays had become a familiar part of the celebration.

The transformation is pretty remarkable.

A figure originally meant to disappear eventually helped inspire beautifully dressed dolls that families carefully display and preserve.

Some communities still maintain that older connection to water.

At Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto, small dolls are placed in straw boats and floated down the Mitarashi River during a March 3 ritual called nagashi-bina.

A related doll-floating tradition also survives in Mochigase, where Japan’s national tourism organization traces the practice back to the Heian period.

The spring doll-floating ceremonies and the June purification rituals aren’t the same event.

But they share a powerful idea: a small figure can carry away what a person hopes won’t follow them any further.

7.
