In one painting, you might see a tiny human figure in each pan. In another, the figures stand for virtues and sins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Often, the lower pan represents the condemned soul, while the lighter one rises toward salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Michael is frequently shown weighing souls at the Last Judgment, sometimes with tiny figures representing the dead inside the pans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And notice how physical the idea becomes. Invisible qualities&mdash;mercy, cruelty, faith, selfishness&mdash;are turned into a balance you can actually see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. In Revelation, he leads the angels into battle against the dragon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Those are the scenes that gave artists their warrior Michael.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">The Book of Daniel presents Michael as a protector, while Revelation describes him fighting the forces of evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">The biblical Michael is a defender, commander, and rescuer. The weighing role came later, through Christian interpretation, funeral traditions, sermons, and art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Neither the Bible nor early Christian writings directly connect Michael with weighing souls, even though weighing was already being used as a metaphor for divine judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">But the connection made sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Michael could fight evil in heaven, protect people in crisis, and stand against the devil, he could also be imagined as the one guarding a soul at the most frightening threshold of all: death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Anubis watches the scales, Thoth records the result, and Osiris waits as judge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Both figures stand beside a set of scales. Both operate at the border between life and whatever comes after. And both turn moral judgment into an image of weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Still, historians don&rsquo;t agree on one direct line of transmission. Some see older traditions influencing Christian art, while others think the scales developed from the Christian idea of divine justice itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">So there probably isn&rsquo;t one simple answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symbol may have traveled across cultures, changed shape, and eventually found a new guardian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. They were also places where people confronted illness, funerals, burial, and the possibility of judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michael&rsquo;s balance gave all of that a face&mdash;and a name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.
