Making friends as an adult is genuinely hard.
If you’ve been struggling to create your own social circle and failing, it’s not because something’s wrong with you. Most of us are dealing with it.
Whether you cut contact with childhood friends or you moved away, you now find yourself having to start over, and you’re at a loss.
You’re no longer in school, where simply being around someone every day creates friendships.
As an adult, you must be intentional. Here are some tips!
1. Make One Friend
When you’re lonely, it’s typical to fall into wishful thinking. Like, if an amazing friend group could just find and adopt you!
Our favorite sitcoms show us these amazing groups of people who always find time for a shared adventure, and it’s natural to want something like that for yourself.
However, it all has to start somewhere.
As an adult, the scenario where the cool kids notice you and welcome you to their lunch table just doesn’t happen anymore.
Now, you have to start with a single new person.
Having just one person you genuinely like spending time with will enrich your life, and they can become your starting point.
2. Show Up for Repeat Activities
Here’s where it’s important to be intentional: your location.
I bet you’re often told to just go and put yourself out there, but repetição is what counts. We tend to make friends with people we see often.
Going to a different bar every day and meeting new people won’t get you anywhere. You’ll end up with a bunch of acquaintances but no friends.
However, attending a yoga class, a book club, or frequenting a coffee shop actually creates opportunities to get to know people better.
You get to spend time with the same group of people until someone eventually suggests meeting somewhere else.
This is where adult friendships begin.
3. Be the One Who Follows Up
This is where things get a little scary for adults. We’ve been conditioned to play it cool and hide our excitement.
We keep waiting for the other person to make the first e the second move, always afraid that we’re being too much.
But you shouldn’t let this fear stop you.
If you had a good time, say so and suggest doing it again next week.
If the other person actually doesn’t vibe with that, then you know they’re not the kind of friend you’re looking for.
This is the vulnerável part, and if you really want to make friends, you’ll have to take some risks.
4. Don’t Just Stick to Small Talk
So, now you’ve started seeing someone regularly, and maybe you’ve gone out for coffee a few times. How do you make sure it doesn’t stop there?
Alguns ligações apenas fizzle out after the initial phase, and the two people end up reluctant acquaintances for life.
You can avoid this by choosing to create depth na vossa relação.
Don’t just stick to adult topics, like weather, work, traffic, etc.
You have to be willing to share something real about yourself, like a small personal struggle, a dream you’re working on, and also be curious about your new friend.
Our closest friends are typically the people who made us feel understood, the people we feel that we can open up to.
If you can bring your connection to that level, you’ve got a new friend!
5. Connect the Circle
After you’ve made two or three friends, you’re finally able to create your próprio friend group!
Introduce them to each other instead of waiting for people to include you in their social circles.
Naturally, don’t try to force things. Sometimes, our closest friends just don’t see eye to eye, and that’s okay. As adults, we’re way too busy to spend our free time with the people we don’t like.
Aim to connect people who share a hobby or opinions, so they don’t feel too awkward around each other.
Slowly but surely, you’ll have your own little community!
6. Accept That It’s Going to Be Awkward
Adult friendships grow slowly, and though it can be a bit awkward, it’s completely normal.
The crucial thing is not to try comparing yourself to how you were as a child.
You were able to make a new best friend in five minutes on the playground, and now you can’t because your standards have matured.
You don’t just need a playmate; you need seu pessoa.
Either way, you might have to text for weeks before it feels natural to start meeting for coffee. And for a little while, you might feel like you’re pretending to be friends until you’re used to each other.
Don’t quit just because it’s not going exactly as you imagined!
Let the friendship breathe and unfold at its own pace. That’s how adults operate!
7. Guard Your Energy
It can be tempting to settle for the first smiley face you encounter, but don’t give your energy to just anyone.
It’s more important to be careful with who you let into your life as an adult than when you were younger. Your time costs a lot more now.
And I’m not sure if this even needs to be said, but not everyone is a good person.
It takes some time to really get to know someone, so try not to get too attached too fast.
Someone can seem like an ideal friend, but when you get to know them a bit better, you find out that they lie, or get jealous easily, or just that hanging out with them leaves you exhausted.
Look for people who make you feel comfortable. Do not compromise on that.
8. Don’t Wait to Feel Confident
This is the biggest mistake adults make when it comes to making new friends: we wait to magically feel confident enough to approach people.
However, confidence isn’t something you feel; it’s something you são.
It’s built through pushing the boundaries of your zona de conforto, so if you just wait around for it to hit you, it’s never going to happen.
Every single person in a great, thriving friend group was once standing exactly where you are right now.
They were alone and nervous, but they broke the ice, and it paid off.
9. You’re Never Too Old to Make Friends
We’ve kind of been conditioned to think that the only friendships that matter are the ones that go back to childhood and college days.
We are taught that after twenty-five, everyone’s friend groups are locked in place, like we don’t have a say in it.
However, you can make friends as an adult or as an older person; it makes no difference. It’s the ligação que counts, not the years!
The best and most meaningful friendships of your life might still be ahead of you!
It’s only too late if you believe it’s too late.
