May Reset: 10 Non-Negotiables You Should Do This Month

May is a bit different from previous months. It has longer days and flows more slowly, so we naturally want to spend more time outdoors.

This is a perfect month to re-establish habits in small, practical ways.

If you want May to feel magical, there are some non-negotiables you should do during this month.

Many times, simple moments can naturally lift your mood and energy again. These moments will be focused on slowing down, reconnecting with others, and allowing your everyday life to feel fun again.

1. Have At Least One Picnic

Sitting outside to eat can basically change the entire mood of a mundane day. A picnic doesn’t require anything fancy; just some food and a blanket in the park down the street will do.

Being outside and enjoying time without rushing anywhere gives you the chance to clear your head. Time spent outside also creates a more casual conversational atmosphere with family or friends.

It’s not about posting the perfect moment on social media; it’s about finding some peaceful time alone for a couple of hours without self-presentation or an agenda.

2. Read One Book Slowly

Don’t try to read as many books as you can in a short amount of time; slow down and find the right one for you; take your time with it! Reading at a slow pace creates a lasting impression of information compared to fast-paced internet scrolling!

Even just reading ten pages before going to sleep is beneficial for your focus and attention. Make sure you choose something that is of interest to you rather than just what is considered productive or impressive.

The experience of reading it is much more important than how fast you can finish it. A single great book can affect your emotional state for a whole month.

3. Watch a Movie With Friends at Home

You don’t have to go to crowded places or spend money on your social life for it to have meaning.

When you have friends over for movie night at home, it’s a much more relaxed atmosphere, and people tend to talk with each other more freely in a relaxed environment as opposed to a busy bar or restaurant atmosphere.

It also allows for not having to put together complicated plans to share time together. Try to choose a film no one has ever seen or an old classic that you remember watching with friends when you were younger.

Often, the conversations you have while sharing your views after the film will become more meaningful than the film itself. Memories of shared experiences are the most powerful kinds of memories.

4. Spend One Day Without Rushing

Most people travel through their day’s routine and do not take note of how quickly everything is happening. This month, make a conscious effort to take at least one day to slow down.

You could walk more slowly, eat lunch without multitasking, and leave yourself extra time before going from one thing to another. You might be surprised at how much less urgency affects your emotional state when you’ve consciously made an effort to slow down your pace.

The improvement of your focus will also be significantly greater than you expect when you slow down.

5. Rearrange One Small Space

You do not have to do a complete makeover of your environment to feel differently about your surroundings. By rearranging a single shelf, corner, or desk, you can create a completely different feeling in the room.

Not only will a small change in your physical environment create a renewed sense of well-being, but reorganizing your surroundings can help you rediscover things you used to ignore.

Your goal is not to reach an ideal, but rather to arrange your space to help create a lighter and more functional environment that works with your current springtime lifestyle.

6. Try a New Café or Restaurant Alone

When you do small activities by yourself, you gain a different kind of confidence. At first, going to a café or restaurant on your own will feel foreign; you will be surprised at how much more relaxed you can become in your own presence.

You will see your surroundings differently as you are no longer focused on having conversation after conversation. Also, there is a calm reset that occurs with this kind of break from your routine.

Bring a book, listen to some music, and just observe where you are. Learning to enjoy yourself makes every day feel calmer than it would if you were always in a hurry.

7. Have a Phone-Free Evening

How many times have you checked your phone today without actually thinking about it? If you have a phone-free evening, you will immediately create peace in your mind.

Once you stop checking for notifications and scrolling through pages of information, you will find that time appears to move at a much slower pace, and you feel more relaxed.

You may even begin to notice an increase in the quality of your concentration and/or the quality of your conversation with other people. Use this time to do simple things. Cook a meal, watch a movie, organize a small item, or go outside and enjoy the fresh air.

8. Listen to an Album From Start to Finish

You probably only think of music as background noise instead of experiencing it at its fullest. During this month, choose one album and don’t multi-task while listening to it; pay full attention to the entire album from start to finish.

You will experience the individual songs differently than if you had listened to them randomly. The albums you listen to tell an entirely different story when you listen to them in order rather than shuffling them randomly.

This has an intrinsic value in that it ensures you will have a slower and more conscious time during the day.

9. Organize a Small Event with Friends Before the Summer Gets Busy

Many people wait far too long before trying to make plans with their friends and end up finding that they do not have time to do anything, because their schedules are all full.

This month, when summer is nearing, try to create a small event with your friends before it gets too hectic. The event does not have to be expensive or complicated; a walk, an easy-going dinner, or a day trip can be just as meaningful.

The key aspect of maintaining friendships is consistently spending time with each other; seeing each other at large events will strengthen your friendship, but not getting together with each other often enough could easily result in months passing by without spending any real time together.

10. Let Yourself Enjoy Things Without Making Them “Useful”

Not everything you do needs to have the potential for making you more productive or proving that you are able to demonstrate your accomplishments.

Watching a funny movie, buying yourself fresh flowers, playing games, going on a short road trip, or spending hours just talking with your friends are all enjoyable; they don’t have to result in any kind of measurable benefit.

People often buy into the idea that they must turn their hobbies into ways to improve themselves. So, during the month, give yourself permission to simply enjoy what you do just because it feels good.
