10 Signs Someone Loves the Idea of You, Not You

Being loved for who you are or being adored for the way someone sees you is not the same thing. Healthy relationships develop by recognizing each partner’s strengths, faults, and evolving personalities as they accept those different traits.

When someone falls in love with just an idealization of their partner, they usually become disappointed when they realize that the reality of their partner will never live up to their fantasy for too long.

Here are ten signs to determine if you’re authentic or an invention of someone else’s imagination.

1. They Fall in Love Very Quickly, But Know Very Little About You

Intense chemistry can develop fairly quickly, but lasting love generally comes from taking time to establish a history together through shared experiences.

If someone professes to love you deeply without knowing much about your value systems, behaviors, or personality, they are likely projecting an imagined image of you into their own mind.

Attraction develops with time and experience; however, genuine love requires greater awareness.

2. They Keep Trying to “Improve” You

If your significant other is treating you like a project, that is unhealthy.

If your partner constantly expresses how much they want to help you change your physical appearance, job, activities, or personality, they are probably looking for a new version of you to fall in love with rather than already loving you for who you are.

Your partner’s affirmation of your worth should provide you with a greater sense of self-confidence than you currently experience. A healthy relationship means you can continue to change but still accept your partner as they exist now, instead of just who they could become.

3. They Don’t Listen When You Disagree

When you disagree about something, it is a good indicator of whether your partner values your opinion or whether they expect you to agree with them.

If your partner dismisses all you say that isn’t what they want to hear, it may mean that they wish for you to be the version of yourself they see in their head, and they don’t care about you being who you really are.

One of the biggest indicators that you have a true emotional connection with someone is when that person listens closely to what you have to say.

4. They Love You Most When You’re Meeting Their Expectations

If their affection only seems to be strong when you are acting the way they want you to, then this may also indicate to you that their bond or feelings for you are only based upon the role you have in their head and not who you really are.

Good relationships do not waver based on your independence. If you feel as though you have to work hard for your partner to give you love, attention, and security, you don’t have a lasting relationship.

5. They Make Assumptions Instead of Asking Questions

Even in healthy relationships, both partners will continue to grow and develop due to their own continued interest and curiosity in one another.

If your partner believes they have all the information on who you really are and often does not inquire about your perspectives, ambitions, or experiences, they will be responding based on an old notion of yourself rather than the living human standing before them.

Engaging in thoughtful questioning is a signal that there is continuing interest.

6. They Ignore Your Boundaries

To respect the individual, one must respect their boundaries. When someone frequently ignores what keeps you comfortable, pushes you into making decisions, or treats you as if your limits pose an inconvenience, they are prioritizing what they want above what is right for you as an individual.

Loving someone is about allowing them to exist with their own personal needs and desires.

If your boundaries are viewed as limitations instead of something deserving of respect, then it is more probable that you are in a relationship that fills someone else’s fantasies rather than supports your authentic identity.

7. They Ignore Parts of Your Personality

If they don’t even pay attention to your hobbies and interests (whatever they may be), they probably aren’t seeing you for who you really are.

If your significant other has no interest in listening to you talk about your hobbies or has no interest in the aspects of you that they don’t like or disagree with, that person creates their own idea of you.

If you feel like your personality is not valuable to your significant other, but your individualism matters to you even though you don’t meet their standards, this is the easiest way to know if your partner truly loves you.

8. They Seem Disappointed When You Act Naturally

After being with someone for a while, both partners will typically begin to relax around each other and act in a way that feels more natural and spontaneous to each of them.

When your partner does not appreciate your natural behaviors, thoughts, opinions, or personality, they are no longer relatable compared to the ideal they created about you; that disappointment could be perceived as disinterest.

A genuine loving relationship allows each partner to develop greater authenticity in themselves rather than performing at a level that is acceptable.

9. They Talk More About Their Future Than Yours Together

Planning for the future together can be fun; however, do any plans include your goals?

When someone makes extensive future plans that do not include asking what you want, they are defining the role of their ideal partner rather than working to understand you as the person who is next to them.

Healthy relationships include the mutual co-creation of both partners’ dreams rather than just expecting a single partner to conform to the other’s expectations.

10. You Feel Like You’re Playing a Role

If you are constantly watching what you say, hiding your interests, or performing differently in order not to disappoint your partner, you may no longer feel that your relationship is genuine.

True love creates an environment of honesty, openness, and individuality. While each of us must make some level of compromise in every relationship, pretending to be a different person can ultimately result in physical exhaustion.
