Even though society generally agrees with the concept of personal choice, this topic continues to spark 判断力 和 误会.
Tell someone you chose a childfree life, and you’ll get one of three reactions: they’ll insist that you will change your mind, they’ll pity you, or they’ll call you selfish.
You get compared to women of the past who had up to ten children, but no one stops to ask if those women ever had a choice!
Well, now we do.
So, here are 8 good reasons why some women choose to stay childfree!
1. Children Weren’t Planned in the Past
We don’t need to go too far into the past to see a time when a woman’s entire life was decided for her as soon as she was born.
You grew up, you found a husband, and now it’s time to have as many children as your body can take.
There was no debate about it. Children were a natural product of marital duties, in which many women also didn’t have a say!
There was no alternative path women could take in life, and the word childfree wasn’t even in the vocabulary.
Even Queen Victoria, who loved her husband dearly, loathed the fact that being intimate with him left her pregnant so many times.
Now, there were always women who seemed destined for motherhood and were personally fulfilled by this enormous role.
But what of those who weren’t?
2. We Don’t Need Kids for Free Labor Anymore
I recently stumbled upon an interesting argument for why people are having fewer children now. And the argument goes: because we don’t 需要 儿童 anymore.
Now, this sounds harsh and apocalyptic, but look at it from a different perspective; people are now having children because they want to!
We no longer live in large farming communities that require endless labor.
In the past, people didn’t hide the fact that they had dozens of children because they needed the workforce.
Children were an economic necessity, another set of hands to ensure the family didn’t starve!
Nowadays, couples choose to have children when they feel ready to cherish and raise individuals.
So, naturally, many of us believe that staying childfree is a better choice than taking on such an enormous responsibility if you don’t feel ready for it.
3. Finally, the Decision Is Ours
In the modern day, women finally have agency.
While politicians still try to pass laws that would allow them to police women’s bodies, we’re not letting them get away with it anymore.
For the first time in history, women get to decide what happens with their lives and bodies, and being childfree is a natural part of that.
We decide when we want children, how many we want, and if we want them at all.
We finally have the luxury of time and space to educate ourselves and choose the right partner to have children with.
Enjoying this level of control means that if a woman decides to be childfree, that’s as valid as deciding to have three children.
We provide so much more to the world now, so our value is no longer tied only to how many babies we can give a man.
4. So What If You Change Your Mind?
Now for that annoying comment about changing your mind. I have just one question: So what?
People change their minds about everything else, so if you come to feel ready for a child of your own, why would that be a problem?
Being childfree isn’t an identity, just like motherhood shouldn’t be everything a woman is.
So, if there comes a time when you feel mature enough, and you genuinely want to have a child, no one gets to treat it like a gotcha moment.
It still won’t be a decision forced on you by society or a husband, but a decision you made.
Changing your mind on your own terms is a win for you!
5. The Money Issue
Clearly, there are also practical and economical sides to choosing a childfree life.
Raising a child is extremely expensive, and you and your partner need to keep providing for them until they turn eighteen, and maybe even longer than that.
Childcare is difficult, and the housing crisis is at its peak.
Still, for many childfree couples, money issues only serve as a good excuse to avoid uncomfortable questions at Thanksgiving dinner.
These practical reasons matter, but they’re not what drives this movement. It still comes down to personal choice.
6. Motherhood Is Often Used to Trap Women
We no longer view motherhood through rose-colored glasses because we’re able to take some time to educate ourselves.
Raising a child is thankless, endless work.
Many women spread themselves thin trying to balance motherhood and career, and marriages famously suffer in the years after a child is born.
More importantly, all of this pressure can force women to remain stuck in unhealthy or abusive relationships because doing it all alone feels overwhelming.
Today, many of us are wise enough to avoid falling into that trap.
We remain childfree, while some of us are willing to consider going the other way when the right man comes into the picture.
Children don’t fix broken relationships; they only get caught in the crossfire.
7. We Choose to Have Children When We’re Mature
Women are now allowed to fully grow up before they’re expected to grow a new life!
Past a certain age, you stop taking motherhood lightly or romanticizing it.
We spend our early 20s getting a higher education, traveling, building our 身份, and learning our 边界.
All of these things are necessary for a fulfilled life – childfree or not.
By the time we reach the late 20s, 30s, and even 40s, we’re able to approach motherhood with the seriousness it deserves.
这是一个 massive sacrifice, and making it with a sound mind is truly noble.
8. Enjoying a Childfree Life for the Women Who Couldn’t
Lastly, childfree women allow their mothers and grandmothers to live vicariously through them!
Those women usually couldn’t pursue education, no matter their potential.
They couldn’t refuse things that made them uncomfortable, and they couldn’t even decide what happened to their bodies!
We are allowing all of their lost potential and crushed dreams to live through us. We are out here living the lives they were violently denied!
We don’t allow anyone to rush us into having children just to tie us down in horrible relationships.
Most childfree women don’t resent children or parents, and they’re not rooting for a world without children’s laughter and play.
We resent these attempts at coercing us into a role we’re not ready for.
If or when you choose to have a child, it needs to be from the heart!
