Today, we are all greedy, without exception.
A long time ago, this desire to have more was a sin we could attach to certain people.
But right now, we live in an environment that constantly reminds us of all the things we don’t have.
No matter what, we always feel left behind because the consumer economy is meant to breed 不满.
This greed isn’t accidental, and it’s not a character flaw; it’s actively encouraged.
所以、 what can you do?
1. Modern Marketing
Marketing is one of the most lucrative businesses right now because it’s endless!
The advertising industry spends several hundred billion dollars per year globally, investing solely into convincing you that you want something you’ve never heard of before.
The system is set up so you can’t run away from ads anywhere, whether you’re online or out on the street.
The average person encounters up to ten thousand advertising messages every single day!
This environment fuels our greed by constantly showing us all the things we don’t have.
Do you really need a smartphone with a marginally sharper camera? Well, now you do, because it’s out there, and you feel like you won’t be able to calm down until you have it!
Advertising is everywhere, and it influences our behavior without us even noticing. That’s the whole point.
2. The Difference Between Need 和 Want
In the past, it was actually the consumers who reached out to manufacturers. When you need a new shirt, you go to your local tailor and get one.
Production was limited, so things were produced to cater to the consumers’ needs.
A clothing company wouldn’t produce a thousand pieces of the same article. It would produce as many as it could reasonably sell.
But we’re long beyond that. Manufacturers no longer cater to our needs; they cater to our greed. And now, thanks to marketing, they reach out to us!
Almost everything is mass-produced, so we’re surrounded by fast fashion, fast food, fast furniture…
And all those countless products keep getting remade with subtle upgrades that leave you buying the same exact product, just marginally improved!
你的 贪婪 is being manipulated, and so is mine and everyone else’s.
3. What Constant Consumption Does to You
There was psychological research on consumerism, and the results weren’t so great.
The industry manipulates your greed to the point where you genuinely believe you’re one purchase away from happiness.
And briefly, you feel a bit better. You’ve got new things to show off, so the following week might feel a bit more exciting than usual.
But that’s about it. Within days, you’re back to normal, looking to consume more because all the 快 things you’ve purchased already feel old.
However, that is the point! A person who stays satisfied after a purchase would stop purchasing, and the industry can’t let that happen.
This phenomenon is called the hedonic treadmill because the manipulation of your greed never stops.
4. How (Social) Media Contributes
Social media is the Trojan horse of the advertising industry.
The products meant to tempt your greed aren’t shown to you by advertisers when you scroll on Instagram; they’re shown to you by influencers and the people you follow.
This is a brilliant move because you also get 情绪投入 in these objects that you don’t really need.
It’s pretty similar with entertainment, such as music videos and shows. When you see your favorite character using a particular brand of makeup, you naturally want to try it for yourself.
It makes you feel like you’re part of that world.
There’s also the 对比. When you see people online showing off a shiny new product, you can’t help but want to catch up to them.
And not to mention, social media platforms constantly sell your data to advertisers, so you keep running into products you find harder to resist!
5. Greed Is a Natural Response
While we continue to partake in endless consumerism, most of us are very aware of what we’re doing.
有 罪责 attached to impulse-buying, and you might even reprimand yourself for being greedy.
However, there’s an important distinction! You’re not naturally a greedy person; your response is simply being engineered!
The system is set up so it pulls you in, making you desire and buy more.
It’s important that we understand this and let go of shame. As long as we continue to blame ourselves and not the industry and its shady methods, we can’t stop.
Your desires have been shaped by the industry for decades now. They’re not who you really are.
6. The Problem Goes Beyond Your Money
The personal cost of living inside such a system is enormous.
Even people who make a decent amount of money struggle to make it through the month because the industry gives us 不切实际的期望.
You’re constantly surrounded by things that fuel your greed, wondering why you’re working so hard if you can’t even afford the trinkets you want.
The truth is, you don’t need all those trinkets, and you probably don’t want them that much either.
And this isn’t even the worst of it.
The cost of producing 快 items is horrific. Everyone is aware of the sweatshops and the backbreaking labor it takes to keep up with the demands of the industry.
ǞǞǞ social cost is also great, as it shapes a society that connects over spending rather than something worthwhile.
By all standards, we’re letting ourselves be influenced by an evil corporation. So, what can we realistically do?
7. Choosing Pleasures That Don’t Require a Purchase
The system might be too complicated and big for us to beat it, but we can remove ourselves 从它。
The best thing you can do is focus on creating satisfaction in your life that doesn’t require you to buy things to maintain it.
Strong relationships, creativity, meaningful work, nature, and a community are all necessary for your well-being.
If you turn away from the consumerist lifestyle and invest your time in these things, you might just find that you’re becoming less greedy.
A long walk, a meal made from scratch, an evening with friends… These are all things that bring you true, lasting fulfillment.
People live wonderful lives without luxury goods, but living without real connections will always be miserable.
8. Practical Ways to Consume Less
You don’t have to turn into that person who lectures everyone about capitalism and hoards every container at home.
You can still enjoy things while not allowing your greed to take over.
We are run by our 欲望, so we need to develop a more 斟酌 approach to them.
That might mean taking some time after you see an item you like. Allow yourself a week or two to really see if you can’t stop thinking about it, or if it was just an impulse.
Understand that advertisements are meant to create a sense of urgency to force you to purchase things 现在, but mass-produced garbage isn’t going anywhere.
Be more judgmental with the things you consume online. Unfollow profiles that make you feel worse about yourself or trigger your consumerism.
When you do buy things, prioritize investing in quality items that are made to last. It might feel more expensive in the moment, but it saves you so much money in the long run.
Lastly, spend more time doing things that cost no money.
You can’t change the modern lifestyle, but you can change your own.
