Narcissistic parents are always concerned with keeping control over their children, and money might be the most common way they do it.
While parents typically seek to help their children become independent and offer financial help from a place of love, narcissists do it their own way.
They use money as a tool, a leash that keeps you dependent and indebted 对他们说。
Financial abuse is often spoken about in regard to marriage dynamics, but what about family?
It can be very 微妙的, but if you suspect your parent might be using money against you, take a look at these signs.
1. The Trojan Gift
When a narcissistic parent gives you money, it’s never just a gift. It’s a loan you never consented to, and the interest is your guilt.
When they swoop in to help you make ends meet, you feel relieved and more than happy to return the favor.
But that doesn’t matter. Narcissists very easily forget what people do for them, but when they do something for you, they’ll bring it up for decades to come.
Every single disagreement or attempt to set boundaries will lead them to throw that 礼物 in your face.
By giving you money, they feel like they bought the rights to your free will.
You are never allowed to forget that you owe them, but you’re also expected to pretend that they’re generous and selfless.
2. They’re Buying the Right to Control Your Life
A narcissistic parent is always looking for an excuse to know your private affairs.
When they offer to help you with a bill or a big purchase, know that their help comes with strings attached.
They genuinely believe that helping you out with rent means they get to interrogate you about anything. And if you push back: How could you?
If there’s one thing they’re good at, it’s playing the victim.
Expect them to ask intrusive questions and question your spending habits.
This invasion of privacy is deeply violating, but to them, it makes perfect sense.
Most people have to go through this ordeal before they learn to never accept money from their narcissistic parent, no matter how tempting the offer might be.
3. Keeping You Financially Uneducated on Purpose
One of the most insidious ways narcissistic parents maintain control is by failing to teach you how to manage money as you’re growing up.
It’s a long game with just one goal: keeping you trapped for as long as possible. This is textbook financial abuse.
They never sat you down and tried to teach you how credit cards and other forms of payment work.
They just hand you cash when you need it or pay for things directly, and if you ever point it out, you’re the problem because you’re ungrateful.
The main job of any parent is to teach their children the skills necessary for an independent life.
Narcissists don’t want you to have a chance to become independent because, in their head, it means you don’t need them.
They also want you to be scared of the real world, so they can always be in control.
4. Treating Your Money Like Theirs
Even when you’re an adult with your own money and responsibilities, a narcissistic parent still fully expects to control it.
They will judge every single purchase you make, and genuinely feel like you owe them 什么东西。
They might try to make you feel guilty by reminding you of all the money they invested into raising you, somehow missing the fact that it was their choice to have you.
They don’t see you as an individual but as an extension of themselves.
By tearing down your financial choices, they chip away at your confidence and make you easier to control.
Eventually, you might even start asking for their permission before buying something.
5. Blackmailing You with Inheritance
If your narcissistic parent has any sort of wealth or property to their name, you bet they’re going to use it against you.
They will dangle the promise of inheritance in front of you, threatening to take it away every time you make an independent choice.
If you do not comply with their demands or stand up to them, they say they’re going to write you out of the will.
It’s a way to keep you on a tight leash, especially if they previously failed to teach you about finances.
They happily hold your potential future over your head to force you into submission.
At that point, you might just ask yourself if the money is even worth it.
6. Calling Your Independence Ungrateful
The moment a person becomes independent enough to no longer need financial help, their parents rejoice. It’s something they have been looking forward to for years.
Their child becomes more capable and confident, and the parents finally get to focus on themselves.
However, a narcissistic parent gets angry. In their warped reality, your independence is an attack on them, as though you no longer need them.
This is very revealing because it shows they’re aware that they have very little to offer besides money.
They want you to feel guilty for succeeding without them, and they’ll try every trick in the book to make you feel insane for wanting boundaries.
They prefer you in the dependent role. Not because they care, but because they want to feel powerful.
7. Flashy Spending
Narcissists mostly care about appearances only, and their spending habits reflect that.
They will drop thousands of dollars on things they can easily show off, but when it comes to the family’s well-being, suddenly they can’t afford it.
Even while you’re in their care, don’t expect them to spend too much unless someone’s around to witness it.
They want to be the parent of the year in front of neighbors and the extended family. So, while someone’s watching, you can get anything you want.
As soon as you’re left alone, even asking for the basics means you’re greedy.
这是一个 heartbreaking dynamic because it truly shows you where their priorities lie. They only care when it can inflate their ego.
