It can be stressful to meet rich individuals due to how quickly we form our first impressions.

Some of our subtle behaviors will close doors, while others can create real respect and interest.

By knowing what not to do, you’ll be able to remain confident, grounded, and true to yourself regardless of the status of the person you are meeting.

1. Acting Impressed by Everything They Say or Do

Meeting wealthy individuals for the first time can easily be ruined if you are too impressed and act like they are more than you.

Wealthy individuals can tell when someone is being overly impressed by what they have, and it appears disingenuous, if not desperate.

Instead of acting like the wealthy individual is on a pedestal, you should interact with them in a manner that shows you are calm and confident. Be curious, but don’t express every little thing about their lifestyle or accomplishments with praise.

Wealthy individuals respect people who act naturally and don’t get overly excited about them. By remaining down-to-earth, you can have a healthy dynamic in which you are able to connect positively with each other.

Keep in mind that wealth doesn’t mean someone has more value; you have just as much value as they do, regardless of their financial status.

2. Talking About Money Too Quickly

When talking to wealthy people, it can be unwise to bring up money in the first part of a conversation.

Questions regarding salary/compensation, assets, or expensive items will leave an impression that you are more interested in their wealth than in who they are as a person.

Instead, wealthy individuals like to have conversations about ideas, dreams, and common interests, rather than about finances. Take your time and allow the conversation to go deeper before trying to build rapport with them through money-related questions.

The best way to establish a connection and gain their trust is by creating a relaxed, open atmosphere while discussing other topics.

3. Trying Too Hard to Prove Your Own Success

When speaking to rich people, many feel the need to share their accomplishments, which makes them appear insecure instead of confident. Rather than boasting about your successes or trying to impress by listing out achievements, it’s more important to be true to yourself.

The majority of wealthy people prefer to see true humility and character in others over boasting and bragging. By demonstrating quiet confidence rather than attempting to compete, you are creating an image that is far more appealing to wealthy individuals.

A calm and serene demeanor indicates that you are secure in your own self-worth without having to prove it through excessive word-of-mouth advertising.

The evidence of your significant accomplishments and personal achievements is shown through the level of comfort you have with yourself, rather than by loud proclamations about those things.

4. Making Assumptions About Their Lifestyle

Do not make the assumption that every rich person has a glitzy lifestyle. Many of those individuals’ stories include a lot of hard work, overcoming obstacles, and a choice to make sacrifices in order to achieve their current level of success.

By generalizing an individual’s lifestyle, you may come across as either judgmental or ignorant about what they have been through prior to achieving their wealth.

Instead, have an open attitude. You can ask them questions from a respectful viewpoint rather than simply from a point of view of how they live in luxury.

Many wealthy people like to feel like individuals rather than being stereotyped as wealthy, and you will likely find your conversations with them to be more relaxed and honest when you treat them in an equitable manner rather than based upon your own preconceived notions.

5. Changing Your Personality to Impress Them

Trying to change your personality in order to make yourself appear more interesting or worthy is an all-too-common mistake. Wealthy people are very perceptive when someone is changing their behavior in order to seek their approval.

For example, pretending to have interests in certain hobbies, acting sophisticated when you are not, or trying to show off by using a vocabulary that is not your norm can make for awkward and uncomfortable interactions.

Therefore, be truthful about yourself and your interests; by being true to yourself, you will be able to establish a more genuine relationship with the wealthy.

Wealthy individuals appreciate those who are confident in their own identity. As you continue to be true to yourself and remain true to your identity, you are increasing your chances of creating a sincere and lasting connection with those who are wealthy.

6. Asking for Favors Too Soon

Requesting a favor, opportunity, or introduction from a wealthy person immediately after meeting them will almost always end in disaster. You can have the best intentions in the world, but it may come off as a transaction instead of a relationship.

Wealthy people highly value personal trust and do not want to be seen as simply assisting a stranger. Allow the connection to mature before asking for anything.

Build a connection by engaging in meaningful conversations about things they care about, developing a natural friendship, and exhibiting an interest in them as a person.

As you continue building your relationship and as trust grows, so will the opportunities to ask for something beneficial to your business. Developing true relationships takes time; however, relationships built on true connections will yield a higher return than if you rush to ask for something.
