The institution had survived persecution, controversy, and the collapse of Rome, but then it was split into<strong> two branches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Great Schism left us with two enormous traditions, both of which claim to be the legitimate continuation of the ancient faith.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the split didn&rsquo;t happen suddenly. It had <strong>culminated over centuries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&rsquo;s see exactly what led to the Great Schism!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. It became centered on Constantinople as <strong>the New Rome<\/strong>&nbsp;and the Byzantine imperial culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It already started to look like the split was inevitable. Language shapes theology, and culture shapes worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two churches started to look very different in the way they expressed, organized, and understood the faith of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. It stated that the Holy Spirit &ldquo;proceeds from the Father.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the early Middle Ages, the Western Church added the words &ldquo;and the Son&rdquo; (<em>filioque<\/em>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This suggested that the Holy Spirit came from both the Father and the Son.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This addition was made locally, then regionally, and eventually became standard in the Western Church without any <strong>formal agreement<\/strong> with the East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Eastern Church held and still holds that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father alone because Jesus said so Himself in John 15:26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main issue here isn&rsquo;t the theology, but <strong>\u6743\u529b<\/strong>; an attempt to change a foundational common text without seeking counsel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. And in the entire Church, the Bishop of Rome was held in honor, regarded as the <strong>first among equals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the centuries, the Western Church gradually developed a theology of papal authority over all Christians everywhere.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time of the Schism, papal authority over the entire Church was a given in the West, while in the East, it was categorically rejected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was a <strong>fundamental disagreement<\/strong> in how the Church should be organized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Both considered the other&rsquo;s practice to be problematic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clerical celibacy was becoming standard in the West, while the Eastern Church allowed its <strong>priests to marry<\/strong>, while monks and bishops would stay celibate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jurisdiction over newly converted territories, like the Balkans, stoked <strong>competition<\/strong> between the two sides, as each fought to spread its influence first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Churches were desecrated, and holy relics were stolen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Eastern Church remembers the Crusade as a painful betrayal, done under the sign of the cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9.
