Within it are four winged creatures, each facing several directions at once. Human hands appear beneath their wings, while their straight legs end in gleaming, calf-like feet.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beside each creature is a wheel, sparkling like a precious stone and built like &ldquo;a wheel intersecting a wheel.&rdquo;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wheels can travel in any direction without turning, and their high rims are covered in eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Above the creatures rises a shining platform with a throne and a humanlike form surrounded by fiery radiance.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The text calls this the appearance of the glory of God. It doesn&rsquo;t simply introduce a species of wheel-shaped angel.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The ancient work known as<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/intertextual.bible\/text\/1-enoch-61.10\/ephesians-1.21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Enoch lists Ophanim<\/a> alongside Cherubim and Seraphim among the heavenly host.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jewish visionary and liturgical traditions also treated them as worshipping beings near God&rsquo;s throne. But no single angelic chart was shared by every community.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian angelology followed a related but different route. Around the late fifth or early sixth century,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/pseudo-dionysius-areopagite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pseudo-Dionysius<\/a> arranged nine angelic choirs into three levels, placing the Thrones in the highest group.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His system became enormously influential. Artists sometimes connected the Thrones with Ezekiel&rsquo;s wheels or with the fiery wheels beneath God&rsquo;s throne in Daniel.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, &ldquo;Ophanim&rdquo; and &ldquo;Thrones&rdquo; weren&rsquo;t simple synonyms in every source.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.
