It carried her name, powerful prayers, strange watching eyes, and a sword-bearing guardian angel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also measured exactly 5 feet 5 inches&mdash;the height of the woman it was meant to protect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. We don&rsquo;t know where she lived, how old she was, or what an ordinary day in her life involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">But we do know she was roughly 5 feet 5 inches tall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">That detail survives because her protective scroll was made to match her body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Now held by the Walters Art Museum, the object is only about 3.2 inches wide, but it stretches to roughly 65.2 inches from end to end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Marta&rsquo;s name also appears beneath the painted angel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">According to the museum catalog, she had previously been believed to be possessed by a devil. The scroll was created to drive away harmful forces and prevent them from returning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">So while it isn&rsquo;t a portrait in the familiar sense, it still preserves something physical about her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its shape follows hers. That measurement was one of its most important features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">In the Ethiopian healing tradition, portable prayer scrolls were often cut to match the height of the person who commissioned them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">It covered the owner symbolically from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">In Tigrinya-speaking areas, this kind of person-sized scroll was known as <em>ma&rsquo;ero qum&auml;t<\/em>, meaning &ldquo;full size.&rdquo; The parchment effectively became a spiritual double of the person it belonged to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Marta&rsquo;s body helped determine the final shape of the object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protection had been fitted to her almost like a garment&mdash;only this one was made from parchment, sacred names, prayers, and images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. They were unordained clerics who could also work as scribes, singers, astrologers, and traditional healers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Making a scroll was a very delicate process. Animal skin was soaked, dried, scraped, and cut into strips. Those pieces could then be sewn together until the scroll reached the required length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">The material was important too. Parchment had once been skin, and now it formed a second skin around the person seeking protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Marta&rsquo;s scroll was personal before a single prayer was added. Its dimensions already belonged to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">And once her name appeared beneath the angel, the connection became even stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This wasn&rsquo;t protection intended for anyone who happened to pick it up. That contrast gives the scroll a rhythm, even before you understand what any of the words mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Its prayers address several dangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">One begins with a passage from the Gospel of Mark about casting out an unclean spirit. Another protects against the evil eye. Other passages call for demons to be caught, bound, and driven away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">The text also uses sacred or secret names known as <em>asmat<\/em>. Within this tradition, knowing and invoking powerful names gave the words greater spiritual force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Archangel Michael appears in the prayers, as does Phanuel, an angel associated here with driving away demons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These weren&rsquo;t just words of comfort. They were written as active defenses surrounding Marta&rsquo;s body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. In total, the scroll contains three main illuminations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Near one end is a circular talisman designed to ward off evil spirits. Farther down appears a guardian angel brandishing a sword. At the other end are the angel&rsquo;s large, watchful eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">The museum suggests that the figure may be Phanuel, since the archangel is invoked in one of the prayers. That identification isn&rsquo;t completely certain, but the angel&rsquo;s purpose is clear enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">It is there to confront something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">The sword gives the protection physical force, while the eyes never look away. Together, they make the angel feel like a guard posted between Marta and whatever she feared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whoever painted the figure gave her protector a face, a weapon, and a gaze strong enough to meet danger directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. During healing rituals, prayers might be read aloud, holy water distributed, and the painted figures shown to the person receiving help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Eyes played an especially powerful role as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">The staring eyes on the scroll could meet and overpower the gaze of a harmful spirit. The images weren&rsquo;t there just to make the parchment beautiful. Looking at them formed part of the healing act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">Medicine, prayer, spoken words, and painted symbols could all work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spiritual protection was something Marta could actually carry, hear, touch, and see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. We can&rsquo;t ask what frightened her, whether the scroll brought her peace, or how often she carried it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">But the object leaves behind an outline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">She had a name. She stood about 5 feet 5 inches tall. Someone measured her, prepared the parchment, copied prayers on her behalf, and painted a guardian angel with its sword already raised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd wp-block-paragraph\">The scroll came from a world in which spiritual danger could feel very physical. Protection had to be equally real&mdash;something made for your body, marked with your name, and carried close to your skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marta may have disappeared from the written record, but her scroll still stands at her exact height.
