She was born to Marguerite Darcantel (Henry) from her brief affair with a successful mulatto businessman Charles Laveaux, on September 10, 1801.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sources trace her maternal family line to her great-grandmother<\/strong>, also called <strong>Marguerite<\/strong>. Though, she had no last name, because she was enslaved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supposedly, she was brought from Senegal to Louisiana by the French slave traders in 1743.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Generational Strife for Freedom<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Marie&rsquo;s great-grandma had a daughter, <strong>Catherine<\/strong>. Marie married a carpenter <strong>Jacques Paris<\/strong> from today&rsquo;s Haiti. Together, they had two daughters, both of whom died very early in childhood.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When, five years after they&rsquo;d gotten married, <strong>Jacques disappeared<\/strong>, she became known as the Widow Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&rsquo;s unclear whether her first husband indeed died, however.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Her Majesty, The Ancient Queen of the Voodous<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Laveau attracted a multiracial spiritual community around herself. <strong>She was a clairvoyant, a healer and quite simply put, a voodoo witch.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Followers came to her for <strong>\u5efa\u8bae<\/strong> \u548c <strong>\u611f\u5b98<\/strong>. She held weekly ceremonies and <strong>combined voodoo, Christianity and European pagan traditions<\/strong> in her practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She led the yearly commemoration of St. John&rsquo;s Eve, which at its core, represents the celebration of the <em>summer solstice<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These celebrations entailed bonfires, ritualistic dances, bathing in the Pontchartrain Lake and great feasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this led her followers to grace her with the title of <strong>the Queen of Voodoo<\/strong> among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Witch And a Woman of God<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite her mystical work, and her connection to paganism and voodoo practice, <strong>Marie Laveau was a devout Catholic<\/strong> her whole life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She orderly went to mass, was married in church and had all of her children baptized. She was even a <strong>godmother<\/strong> at two baptisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Marie supported Catholic education<\/strong> and often gifted means to charity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later in life, she stopped working with voodoo and devoted herself to charity and helping people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>She was very well known for her spiritual aid to prisoners.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, the prisoners <strong>condemned to death<\/strong> were often helped by her. Marie became involved with <strong>Louis Christophe Dominic Duminy de Glapion<\/strong>, who was a descendant of French nobles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their relationship was characterized as <strong>a domestic partnership<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two had several children together, of which only two were able to survive to adulthood.
