Truth Behind Shen Yun: Artistic Movement or a Dangerous Cult

Truth Behind Shen Yun: Artistic Movement or a Dangerous Cult

If you have heard of Shen Yun, odds are, you know it for the spectacular dance performances that celebrate Chinese culture.

However, behind the colorful backdrops, the organization is actually swimming in controversy.

There have been federal investigations, lawsuits, horrific allegations, and the group also seems to be connected to the religious cult Falun Gong

So, what’s actually going on, and how is the Chinese Communist Party involved?

1. What Is Shen Yun?

Shen Yun is a dance and music troupe based in New York.

The group tours around the world, putting on incredible performances that display traditional Chinese culture, specifically, pre-communist China.

Publicly, their goal is to revive ancient art forms and share Chinese history with a global audience.

Shen Yun is an absolutely massive group! It has eight touring companies and about 80 performers per show.

The performances are colorful and lively, with elaborate backdrops of ancient temples and cityscapes.

The performances also include bilingual hosts, giving the audience a chance to learn some Chinese phrases.

All of this has made the group extremely popular and rich, but sadly, it also seems to be terribly corrupt.

2. Spirituality of the Falun Gong

Shen Yun is closely linked to Falun Gong, a spiritual practice that originated in 1992 and has been systematically banned in China.

It was founded by Li Hongzhi, and it combines meditation and breathing exercises with spiritual teachings.

Falun Gong is known to be extremely anti-Communist, and this is where the trouble begins.

Communism is notorious for harsh censorship and rejection of criticism, and, as mentioned, the CCP has banned the movement in China, claiming it’s heretical.

This makes it very hard to figure out whether the group is truly dangerous and corrupt, or if all of these allegations came as a result of propaganda.

By working with groups like Shen Yun, Falun Gong has gained practitioners all over the world. However, even in places like Sweden, they’re being persecuted and banned.

3. The New York Times Exposé

In 2024, the New York Times published an exposé revealing troubling details about Shen Yun.

The report claimed performers were discouraged from seeking medical treatment when injured because of their religious beliefs.

Allegedly, they had to perform despite the injuries and were emotionally manipulated by leaders who kept them under tight control.

Financial coercion was also mentioned; if a performer tried to quit, they would be forced to pay back the organization for education, lodging, and food costs.

A former performer even filed a lawsuit accusing the group of child trafficking and abuse.

Naturally, all of these raised serious questions about Shen Yun’s ethics and practices, and federal agencies began investigating its operations.

4. The Cult-Like Tactics

Many former members claim that Shen Yun and Falun Gong both use cult tactics to keep followers in line.

They isolate members, discourage contact with outsiders, and actively instill fear in their followers.

There are also claims that Li Hongzhi is omniscient and can read minds, which adds to the sense of control, coercing people into obedience.

Much like with most other cults, the followers are allegedly taught that leaving Falun Gong will lead to eternal damnation.

As for Shen Yun, performers are also told that they’re part of a divine mission to save humanity.

Demanding loyalty and discouraging any questions about authority is a textbook cult tactic.

5. The $51 Million Revenue

In 2023, Shen Yun’s revenue topped $51 million, which, you have to admit, is impressive for a cultural organization.

However, there are allegations that much of that money comes from the performers.

They’re forced to pay for all of their working expenses themselves, like lodging and food they consume during training and performance, which should typically be covered by the employer.

This manufactures debt, making it very hard for them to leave, while also making sure that all the money they’re paid finds its way back to the organization.

Aside from the financial side of things, performers are afraid to leave because of the possibility of being blacklisted from future work in the industry.

The touring and productions also require a lot of funding, which raises even more questions about where the money is coming from.

6. The Political and Religious Agenda

Shen Yun and Falun Gong are deeply political movements.

They openly criticize the CCP and promote traditional Chinese values, which the current government isn’t aligned with.

Many see Shen Yun as a tool for political activism, which, personally, I see nothing wrong with.

However, the same group that rejects communism for not respecting human rights, allegedly abuses its own performers financially, medically, mentally?

This anti-Communist stance has gained the organization both supporters and enemies from all over the world.

Critics argue that the political agenda often overshadows the art.

The religious beliefs of Falun Gong, with allegedly extreme beliefs and apocalyptic warnings, further complicate things.

7. The Future Is Uncertain

Despite all the allegations, Shen Yun proceeds with its massive show.

The 2026 world tour is happening despite the backlash and attacks.

Some people believe that the organization is a cultural treasure, a group of devoted patriots who want to preserve their culture and keep it separate from the Communist ideology.

Others are more concerned about the performers’ safety and working conditions, and also the questionable tactics.

There have also been attempts at organized attacks on both these groups, which complicates everything even further.

So, do you think Shen Yun is a target of political propaganda or an actual cult?
