Throughout the Bible, angels appear as messengers, guides, protectors, and servants of God. They announce births, provide warnings, deliver instructions, and reveal important parts of God’s plan.
From Gabriel speaking to Mary to angels appearing to shepherds near Bethlehem, these heavenly messengers play a significant role in many biblical events.
This naturally raises an interesting question. If God is all-powerful, why use angels at all?
While the Bible does not give a single direct answer, Scripture provides several themes that help explain why angels often serve as God’s messengers.
Here are five reasons many theologians and Bible readers believe angels frequently deliver messages instead of God speaking directly.
1. Angels Are Part of God’s Divine Order
One reason angels deliver messages is that God often works through an established order within creation.
Throughout the Bible, God regularly chooses to accomplish His purposes through others rather than acting alone in every situation.
He works through prophets, judges, kings, apostles, and ordinary people. In a similar way, He also uses angels as part of His heavenly administration.
Scripture frequently portrays angels as servants carrying out specific assignments. They are not independent powers acting on their own authority.
Instead, they serve God’s purposes and carry out His commands. This pattern appears throughout both the Old and New Testaments.
Angels announce important events, provide guidance, and help fulfill God’s plans at key moments in history.
Using angels demonstrates that God often chooses to involve His creation in His work.
Rather than bypassing every other being, He allows both heavenly and earthly servants to participate in carrying out His will.
