How the Bible Paints the Portrait of a Truly Great Husband

How the Bible Paints the Portrait of a Truly Great Husband

Being a good husband doesn’t only come down to the practical things you do for your family.

The Bible offers a guide for what it means for a man to be a truly great partner, highlighting love that is unconditional and rooted in Christ’s example.

These biblical principles can help you become the man your marriage and faith deserve.

1. Love Sacrificially, Like Christ

Ephesians 5:25 tells husbands to love their wives as Christ loved His church, giving Himself up for her.

This is the sacrificial love of a leader who puts the needs of those he loves before his own.

A truly great partner is able to make necessary sacrifices, forgive, and prioritize his wife’s well-being over pride.

Christ’s love was selfless and unwavering, and the Bible calls men to the same standard.

Loving like this means patience in difficult times and kindness in everyday life.

When mutual love is sacrificial, it becomes the foundation of a marriage that’s strong and durable.

2. Treat Your Wife Like Your Own Body

Ephesians 5:28 says that husbands should love their wives as their own bodies, because through loving their wife, they love themselves.

These words remind us that marriage is upheld by mutual care.

A great man sees his wife as an extension of himself – someone he’s committed to nurturing and protecting.

When you cherish your wife, you’re also caring for your own well-being because a healthy relationship benefits you both.

Put in an effort to understand her needs and look at her as someone irreplaceable

Loving your partner means investing in the very fabric of your relationship.

3. Avoid Becoming a Bitter Husband

Colossians 3:19 commands husbands to love their wives and not to become bitter against them.

This is a call to be mindful of your heart and attitude, especially through turbulent times for your relationship.

Marriage requires patience and forgiveness; holding onto bitterness makes your relationship unsustainable.

Instead, choose to love each other every day, even though sometimes it might take effort.

Listen more than you criticize, and show appreciation often.

When you keep your heart open and tender, you foster a marriage that’s lasting and pleasing to God.

4. Honor and Understand Your Wife

1 Peter 3:7 encourages husbands to give honor and treat their wives with understanding. Women might be more physically delicate, but they are men’s equals in God’s eyes.

Being a great partner means respecting her feelings and listening to her words.

Your authority at home cannot come without humility and kindness, or that isn’t love.

Understanding her perspective and treating her with due respect builds trust and intimacy.

When you honor your wife, your prayers won’t be hindered because you’re living in harmony with God’s design.

Mind you, honor isn’t just kind words; it’s a daily lifestyle that demonstrates genuine love and respect.

5. Celebrate Her Beauty

The Song of Solomon beautifully describes the wife’s beauty, highlighting that both her outer and inner qualities are to be cherished.

A great husband celebrates his wife’s unique beauty; her smile, her laugh, and even her kindness and strength.

You’re appreciating the woman God created her to be.

Compliment her genuinely and often, and remind you that she’s truly valued as an individual.

When love is joined by admiration and gratitude, it creates a joyful marriage.

Making her feel beautiful and loved strengthens your bond and keeps your marriage alive.

6. Your Wife Is Your Primary Family

Genesis 2:24 says that a man shall leave his parents and unite with his wife to become one flesh

This shows that a great husband is committed to building a new family with his wife.

It’s important to prioritize your marriage above all else and create a partnership filled with mutual respect and love.

Leaving your old family behind doesn’t mean abandoning them, but simply understanding that the union you have with your partner is your primary family.

This union requires intentional effort and communication.

The scripture reveals God’s purpose for married couples. A great partner does his best to see it through.

7. Find Joy in Your Wife

Proverbs 18:22 states that finding a good wife is a blessing, something rare and valuable.

A great husband cherishes his wife as a gift from God, and understands that marriage is a divine blessing meant to bring fulfillment.

Nurture that joy by being attentive and affectionate.

Marriage means delighting in each other, and choosing to put each other first.

When you see your partner as a gift from God, your attitude goes from obligation to gratitude.

You find joy in each other through mutual support, sharing workload, and having fun together.
